TFDP‘s work includes advocacy, public education, and litigation to improve access to counsel and the quality of representation provided to poor people accused of crime in Texas.
Through public education, TFDP helps communities understand and advocate for their rights in the criminal justice system, including the right to counsel, and teaches individuals how to navigate the process for requesting a court-appointed lawyer.
Through advocacy, TFDP works in the legislature, before state agencies, and with local officials to improve indigent defense practices in Texas.
Through litigation, TFDP fights in the courts to challenge policies that deny Texans their right to the assistance of counsel when they are accused of a crime.
