Public Education

TFDP staff present information on the right to counsel to groups in schools, churches, women‘s shelters, and other community organizations throughout the state of Texas. These presentations aim to educate communities about their rights in the criminal justice system and to train individuals how to advocate for those rights if they ever are accused of crime. TFDP offers specific training on how to request a court-appointed lawyer and how to respond to common practices that make it difficult for poor people accused of crime to obtain a court-appointed lawyer in some Texas counties.

TFDP also publishes public education materials in English and Spanish on the right to counsel and the consequences of misdemeanor convictions:

What to do if you can‘t afford a lawyer in Texas

Tip Sheet: How to ask for a court-appointed lawyer

What you don‘t know can hurt you: Why you need a defense lawyer if you are charged with a misdemeanor

If you are interested in having TFDP talk to your group, or to order hard copies of TFDP‘s educational materials, please contact Adrián de la Rosa. Subject to availability, TFDP will provide hard copies of its educational materials to community organizations free of charge.
